    A FULL RIDE TO FREEDOM? In 2016, when Pedro Hernandez was 16, he was charged with firing a gun into a crowd in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx in September 2015. One teen was shot in the leg. Pedro has been incarcerated at Rikers Island ever since. Pedro has maintained his innocence to this day and during his time behind bars acquired his GED and a college scholarship. The Catholic Foundation celebrated Catholic education with the 4th Annual Foundation Scholars Prayer Breakfast at the El Paso Club. Parents, scholars, families, teachers, principals, and men and women religious gathered to celebrate the Bishop’s Scholars, Faith Scholar, Hunt Scholars, and Miles Scholars. The Foundation awarded $162,738 in financial aid to 72 Foundation Scholars attending El Paso’s Catholic Schools in 2016-2017. Most of the scholarship aid was distributed from scholarship endowed funds, like the Mike & Clara Miles Scholarship Fund, with the remainder coming from donations and a generous grant from the Hunt Family Foundation. The Father Yermo choir sang the gathering song, Bishop Mark J. Seitz led the prayer breakfast, and Sr. Helen Santamaria, SL, blessed the meal. Jo Soto was the guest speaker. Born and raised in El Paso, she is a Catholic education advocate who has given quietly and tirelessly to the El Paso community for decades. Fr. Allan Alaka, parochial vicar at St. Raphael Parish, concluded the breakfast with the poem “God Has Created Me” by John Henry Cardinal Newman, the patron saint of Catholic education and university students.

Murray was born in the Bronx, New York on September 23, 1980 to poor, and drug-addicted parents who would later each contract HIV. She became homeless just after she turned 15, when her mother died of AIDS, and her father moved to a homeless shelter. Murray fought through some incredibly difficult circumstances and was finally able to turn her life around when she began attending the Humanities Preparatory Academy in Chelsea, Manhattan.Though she started high school later than most students, and remained without a stable home while supporting herself and her sister, Murray graduated in only two years. She was awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and was accepted into Harvard University, matriculating in the fall semester of 2000
